Abstract

TURMERIC RHIZOME AS DIABETIC NEURPATHY PREVENTION THERAPY

ABSTRACT

Diabetic neuropathy is one of the most common complications experienced by people with diabetes mellitus, both type 1 and type 2. Diebetes melitus is a chronic disease which is the number one cause of death in the world, about 63.5% of deaths. Diabetic neuropathy tends to attack the distal nerve fibers so that it is often found in the extremities that can cause further complications such as foot ulcers, infections, gait disorders, and amputations. The purpose of this article is to determine the benefits of turmeric rhizome as a prevention of diabetic neuropathy. This research method is a literature review using articles published in 2005 to 2019 as sources of literature. Curcumin is one of the active components of turmeric rhizome (Curcuma longa) which has long been used as a medicinal plant by the Asian community. Research showed curcumin has various medical benefits such as antioxidants, anti-inflammatory, anticancer, neuroprotective, and others. Curcumin can prevent neuropathy in diabetics by inhibiting the process of glycation, regulating polyol pathways, and inflammatory factors.
